*Alright, so for anyone installing this on the STEAM VERSION of the game as of 23-JUNE-2017, here is what you need to know.
*First of all, the freaking installation guide they give is just confusing as hell.
*You may have done the same mistake as I have and directly installed the ’standalone’ 3.2 PATCH that ’does not require any previous TATW installations’. Extremely deceiving.
*I’m pretty sure whoever wrote that, actually meant previous TATW patches precisely. But 3.2 is the only damn patch (besides the 3.1 patch that they mention just to confuse you more, because it’s not needed!), I have no idea what was in the writer’s head. The lay-out and order of the instructions are incredibly damn confusing!
*I recommend starting fresh and deleting any previous installations.
**** SO HERE IS A DUMMIES CLEAR GUIDE TO INSTALL THIS MOD FOR STEAM USERS ***
*1. Make sure you have the Base Game installed (Medieval II: Total War) in your Steam Library.
*2. Make sure you have the Expansion DLC installed (Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms) in your Steam Library.
*# I also recommend you start up the game if you haven’t until now so Steam can install its final utilities for the game and create remaining files.
*3. Now come back to the Mod’s web page and browse to the files tab of the mod.
*(or just go to this link if you’re lazy: http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war/downloads)
*II THE DOWNLOADS
*4. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.0 Part 1of2 (1.58GB) # THE BASE INSTALLATION, a.k.a. the mod won’t work without this.
*5. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.0 Part 2of2 (1.99GB) # THE BASE INSTALLATION, a.k.a. the mod won’t work without this.
*6. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.2 Patch (217MB) # PATCH, a.k.a. the thing that’s installed OVER the BASE INSTALLATION which adds updates and fixes to the mod.
*III THE INSTALLATION
*(make sure you select the STEAM PATH, it may look something like this:
*D:a_directorymaybe_another_directorySteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total War)
*# I RECOMMEND that you copy (CTRL + C) the path from the installer once you write it/select it for the installation, because you will need it two more times, so you can just paste (CTRL + V) it again.
*8. Install TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe (make sure you select/write the right installation path again).
*9. Install TATW_3.2_Patch.exe (again, make sure the install path is correct).
*# you’re still here? good! almost done.
*# now you should have the mod installed! just a few more MANUAL touches needed for it to launch properly.
*IV FINISHING TOUCHES version 2 (simpler and more elegant)
*# first check if there is a Third_Age_3 folder in the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmods folder, if it’s there then you’re good; if there is no Third_Age_3 folder then you chose the wrong path for the mod installation, try finding where you installed it and just copy the folder in the mods folder here.
*10. Now go to your Steam Library and right click Medieval II: Total War, then select Properties, and then click Set Launch Options. In there copy/paste this line: --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3
*11. Now you can just start the game from Medieval II: Total War (not any of the Kingdoms campaigns) in the Steam Library.
*#The Third Age - Total War shortcut on your desktop created by the mod’s installer earlier won’t work unless you go to SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total WarmodsThird_Age_3 folder and edit with Notepad the Third Age.bat line that has written kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe, however this is completely optional, you can just delete the shortcut and start the game from the Steam Library or create a shortcut from there and it will work as it should.
*# if you wanna go back to playing the original game just remove this line --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3 from the Launch Options in Steam.
*12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY!
*# a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop.
*# 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash:
*Go into the modsThird_Age_3data folder and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db
*if crashes still happen then proceed going from the data folder into dataworldmapsbase and there delete this file: map.rwm
*This should fix most of the crash issues that the game has, for any other problems try searching on Google, most likely there will be a solution.
*You can also check the Reforged version of this mod (mostly focused on the multiplayer aspect): http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-reforged
*# IV FINISHING TOUCHES version 1 (less elegant, still works)
*10. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmods folder. There you should find the Kingdoms expansion dlc folders and the Third Age mod folder a.k.a: americas, british_isles, crusades, teutonic and Third_Age_3.
*# if there is no Third_Age_3 folder then you chose the wrong path for the mod installation, try finding where you installed it and just copy the folder in the mods folder here.
*Rename any one of the four Kingdoms campaign folders to something like this: americas_originalfolder
*# preferably rename a campaign you don’t like, because you will not be able to play that campaign until you rename it back to it’s original name, in this example, americas.
*Now rename the Third_Age_3 folder to americas (or to the name of the folder you previously chose to rename, but in this example I chose americas). Now every time you launch the Americas campaign from the Steam Library it will actually launch the Third Age mod.
*11. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmodsamericas folder (that should actually be the Third_Age_3 folder but the one you renamed).
*Now there, right click Third Age.bat and click Edit or open with Notepad. Then look for the line where you see written: kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe. After that, save the file and exit.
*# for you folks out there that did not find the Third Age.bat file (like me before I wrote this guide), it’s because you did not install TATW_3.0_Part1of2.exe and TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe, so go follow steps 3.-6. and then continue to follow the rest.
*12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY!
*# a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop.
*# to launch the mod: right click Medieval II: Total War in the Steam Library, then click on Medieval II: Total War Americas (or any campaign that you previously renamed in the mods folder, in this example I used the americas).
*# 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash:
*Go into the modsamericasdata folder (americas being actually the renamed Third_Age_3 folder we edited earlier in my example) and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db

Now you can just start the game from Medieval II: Total War (not any of the Kingdoms campaigns) in the Steam Library. #The Third Age - Total War shortcut on your desktop created by the mod’s installer earlier won’t work unless you go to SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total WarmodsThird_Age_3 folder and edit with Notepad the Third Age.bat line that has written kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe, however this is completely optional, you can just delete the shortcut and start the game from the Steam Library or create a shortcut from there and it will work as it should. # if you wanna go back to playing the original game just remove this line --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3 from the Launch Options in Steam. 12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY! # a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop. # 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash: Go into the modsThird_Age_3data folder and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db if crashes still happen then proceed going from the data folder into dataworldmapsbase and there delete this file: map.rwm This should fix most of the crash issues that the game has, for any other problems try searching on Google, most likely there will be a solution. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmods folder. There you should find the Kingdoms expansion dlc folders and the Third Age mod folder a.k.a: americas, british_isles, crusades, teutonic and Third_Age_3. # if there is no Third_Age_3 folder then you chose the wrong path for the mod installation, try finding where you installed it and just copy the folder in the mods folder here. Rename any one of the four Kingdoms campaign folders to something like this: americas_originalfolder # preferably rename a campaign you don’t like, because you will not be able to play that campaign until you rename it back to it’s original name, in this example, americas. Now rename the Third_Age_3 folder to americas (or to the name of the folder you previously chose to rename, but in this example I chose americas). Now every time you launch the Americas campaign from the Steam Library it will actually launch the Third Age mod. 11. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmodsamericas folder (that should actually be the Third_Age_3 folder but the one you renamed). Now there, right click Third Age.bat and click Edit or open with Notepad. Then look for the line where you see written: kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe. After that, save the file and exit. # for you folks out there that did not find the Third Age.bat file (like me before I wrote this guide), it’s because you did not install TATW_3.0_Part1of2.exe and TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe, so go follow steps 3.-6. and then continue to follow the rest. 12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY! # a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop. # to launch the mod: right click Medieval II: Total War in the Steam Library, then click on Medieval II: Total War Americas (or any campaign that you previously renamed in the mods folder, in this example I used the americas). # 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash: Go into the modsamericasdata folder (americas being actually the renamed Third_Age_3 folder we edited earlier in my example) and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db if crashes still happen then proceed going from the data folder into dataworldmapsbase and there delete this file: map.rwm This should fix most of the crash issues that the game has, for any other problems try searching on Google, most likely there will be a solution.
